Pennsylvania Scenic Rail Excursion

Depart Cleveland early by motorcoach and travel to Pennsylvania’s famous Horseshoe Curve, a National Historic Landmark completed by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1854. The curve became one of the country’s notable railroad engineering achievements and remains an active rail corridor today.

Visitors may access the observation area above the curve for views of current rail operations. From Horseshoe Curve, continue to the Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona for a closer look at the people and history behind Pennsylvania railroading.

Dinner is included at a local restaurant before continuing to Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, for a one-night stay at the Fairfield Inn.

After breakfast and hotel check-out, begin the first scenic rail experience of the trip at the historic East Broad Top Railroad.

Completed in 1874, East Broad Top is a preserved three-foot narrow-gauge railroad and an important part of Pennsylvania’s railroad heritage. Enjoy a one-hour train ride, followed by a boxed lunch and a one-hour tour of the railroad’s historic shop facilities.

After the visit, continue by motorcoach to Cumberland, Maryland. Two nights of accommodations are confirmed at the Fairfield Inn Cumberland.

After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy the second scenic rail excursion of the journey aboard the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad.

This approximately 16-mile rail experience travels through the Allegheny Mountains and includes lunch in the dining car while taking in the mountain scenery along the route.

After returning to the Cumberland depot at approximately 4:00 PM, the remainder of the afternoon and evening is yours to explore the shops, restaurants, and historic surroundings of downtown Cumberland.

After breakfast and hotel check-out, travel east to Lancaster County for a full day centered on Pennsylvania railroad history.

Begin at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, home to an extensive collection of historic locomotives and rolling stock representing generations of rail transportation.

Next, board the Strasburg Railroad for a scenic ride through the countryside of Pennsylvania Dutch Country and working Amish farmland.

Before checking into the hotel, enjoy an included smörgåsbord dinner. The next three nights are at Eden Resort & Suites in Lancaster.

After breakfast, travel to Gettysburg for a day focused on one of the most significant chapters in American history.

Visit the Gettysburg Museum of the Civil War for an introduction to the events surrounding the Battle of Gettysburg, fought July 1–3, 1863.

A guided tour of the battlefield sites follows, providing additional context for the people, places, and events connected to the battle and Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

Dinner is included in Gettysburg before returning to the Eden Resort.

After breakfast, begin the day with a guided sightseeing tour through the picturesque Amish Farmlands of Lancaster County.

Visit an Amish quilt and craft shop located on a working Amish farm before continuing to Kitchen Kettle Village. Here, you’ll have time to explore more than 40 shops and restaurants, including the Jam & Relish Kitchen, where traditional jams, jellies, and relishes are prepared.

Return to the hotel for a short break before heading out for a special “Down on the Farm” dinner. Enjoy an authentic Pennsylvania Dutch family-style meal prepared and served by an Amish family on their farm.

After breakfast and hotel check-out, begin the return trip to Cleveland.

Along the way, stop at the Flight 93 National Memorial, which honors the 40 passengers and crew members of United Airlines Flight 93 who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

After time at the memorial, continue by motorcoach toward Cleveland.

A late-afternoon arrival home is planned.
